Merry Christmas

December 24, 2008

This is one of my favorite Christmas decorations. It is a hand carved, hand painted wooden Saint Nicholas. My brother-in-law brought him to us from Russia. I think he is precious.

And he carries from me to you wishes for a safe and joyous winter holiday!

Christmas Garland

November 12, 2008

I’m always looking for good fine motor activities for my daughter, T. Last week I came across a post about ragamuffin garland at Nesting Place. So I decided we would make a garland for our mantle. It is great practice for T as she just has to tie and tie and tie and tie… and when we finally get done we will have a lovely garland to festoon our family room mantle.

As you can see, T thinks that it looks best in full motion!

Peter Pan

November 1, 2008

Peter Pan had a blast flying around the neighborhood collecting candy last night. She just kept saying, “I love Halloween, I love Halloween!”

Tina and I had so much fun last week when we went with her Girl Scout Troop to see a musical, Seussical. Based on the story Horton Hears a  Who, it had a complete cast of characters including The Cat in the Hat, Horton, The Wickersham Brothers, and The Whos.

The costumes and scenery were, as is to be expected, colorful, outlandish and fun.

The most exciting part for Tina was getting her picture taken with JoJo, the thinker of strange and wonderful thinks.

Apple Dip

October 2, 2008

A friend of mine made this yummy Apple Dip for me this week and I just had to go home with the recipe. I thought I’d share it with you too…

Apple Dip

1/2 cup Butterscotch Chips

1 can Eagle Brand Milk

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp white vinegar

In a small saucepan over medium heat melt together the butterscotch chips, milk and salt. After they are melted add the cinnamon and vinegar and stir well. Serve with sliced red and green apples.

No More Plastic

September 21, 2008

Ursula had a great question for me in response to my post on plastic shopping bags. She asked, “I’m curious, what do you use for garbage bags? I use the plastic bags from the store…”

Ursula, that does make a lot of sense. Why go out and buy bags for trash when the stores give you a bunch of them every week? Using the bags that the stores give you makes a lot of economical sense.

But my goal is to reduce the amount of plastic that I contribute to land fills in order to reduce my own impact on the landscape. That is why I have opted to buy reusable bags to use while shopping- and I might add I have been successful with that new habit. My next step is to figure out what to use for trash bags and I am still working on that. I have a couple of options that I am looking at and am planning to do further research into other options.

There are bags available that are biodegradable. Ecosafe biodegradeable bags and Biobags are a couple of the options I have looked at but I have no recommendation yet on which would be best. I have heard that there are some problems with some of these biodegrading before they reach the curb for pick-up which renders them of very little value. So I plan to test out some of these new products and will hopefully find one that is useful and not too expensive. I’ll let you know  when I come up with something!

On another train of thought, have you seen that Quilter’s Dream has a new batting out that is made 100% from recycled plastic bottles? It is called Dream Green. I have not tried it yet, but I have a sample here and it is surprisingly soft and cuddly. It is available in the select loft, which is a fairly thin batt. Next time I place an order with Quilter’s Dream I’m going to try one.

In the meantime, I hope that you are enjoying your corner in nature.

I’m Back!

September 4, 2008

Over the last two days I spent 24 hours on the road with other travelers and big rigs; what fun!! I do enjoy seeing all of the graphics on the big rigs though. Sometimes they give me ideas for my own art work.

But there was one truck whose graphics I have to take issue with. I don’t remember the company’s name but their tag line was

“We serve the best customers in the world”.

I would have to disagree with them because without a doubt

I serve the best customers in the world!! 🙂

Vacation Time

August 14, 2008

I won’t be posting for about 3 weeks as I’ll be visiting family in Indiana. I hope that you enjoy these last few weeks of summer. See you after Labor Day.

Blue Beauty

July 25, 2008

Blue Beauty is a flash movie of photos of earth taken from Endeavor. They are beautiful! My favorites are the night shots.

I try to imagine what it would be like to be space walking up there like that and it seems it would almost be overwhelming. I guess it would be the opposite of claustrophobia; everything would be so big and far away. If given the chance, I’d probably try it though!

No More Plastic!!

June 5, 2008

We did a week’s worth of shopping today and were able to fit it all into 4 bags, except for the milk and juice bottles; they are easier to carry without a bag anyway. And I found the bags easier to carry because the handles are long enough to go over my shoulder. The checkout clerk was not too happy with me though. It seems that the reusable bags are harder to pack. Too bad 🙂 I think that she will get over it.

I never did count how many plastic bags I used to use, but I would estimate 12- 15 every week. So in a month’s time I may save 53 plastic bags from the dump! Yea! I’m going to stick the bags back in the van so that I won’t forget them… theoretically.

Now, what to do about all of those plastic bottles…
